A Rich History With Timeless Charm

Original Owners The story of our home begins in the early to mid-1800s, when the original house was built and owned by Dr. W.C. Curtis. This grand two-story home proudly stood facing Fort Johnston across what is now Moore Street. By the 1930s, however, time had taken its toll, and the house was sadly demolished.

A new chapter began in the mid-1930s when Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Plexco acquired the property. They constructed the current brick home, which was later expanded after a neighboring house was lost to fire. This expansion created a spacious kitchen, a larger driveway, and a backyard that adjoins the charming original carriage house.

The New Innkeepers In 2024, Amy and John became the proud owners of this beautiful property, now known as Carriage House Inn Southport.

Amy grew up on Oak Island, while John is originally from Rochester, NY. Their connection to both places inspired the names of two of our guest rooms: The Yaupon Room, named after Yaupon Beach on Oak Island, and The New York Room, reflecting John’s roots.

John is an Army veteran who served 14 years in the infantry, including active duty and with the NC and SC National Guard. He was deployed to Panama, served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, and participated in Operation Just Cause and Desert Storm. After his military career, he earned his degree from the University of South Carolina – Coastal and later obtained a master’s degree from NC State University.

Amy and John frequently visited the Southport area to see family, but finding a place that welcomed pets proved difficult. When they discovered this house for sale, they knew it was the perfect fit. Though it needed some TLC, they saw its potential as a welcoming inn where guests—both human and furry—could relax and enjoy the charm of Southport. Today, Carriage House Inn Southport is the only pet-friendly bed and breakfast in downtown Southport, offering warm hospitality to all.
